LONG AND SHORT COURSE FOR 2014!

SHORT COURSE:  400 yard swim, 13 mile bike, 5K run

LONG COURSE:  800 yard swim, 27 mile bike, 10K run

Sunday, September 14, 2014

White Bear Lake, MN

Overview

In years past, One Last Tri has been held at Big Marine Park near Stillwater.  We love the park setting, and the course, but parking has always been an issue and an inconvenience to you as a participant.  So, in 2013, we've moved the race to our own backyard, beautiful White Bear Lake and had a great time, so that is where we will hold it for 2014 as well!

Not only that, but we're excited to add a long course distance to One Last Tri!

Based on prior feedback, swimming in Minnesota lakes in September can be a bit chilly.  So we've shortened the swim leg of the race.   The bike course loops around rural roads north of White Bear, and the run is FLAT and fast, on the paths right next to White Bear Lake.

We're excited to make One Last Tri the best it can be, and the most fun for you as our guest!

Special thanks to Ramsey County Parks and Recreation Department, and White Bear Lake Park, for use of their outstanding location and facilities.  One Last Tri is being chip-timed by Final Time, Inc.

Packet Pick-up

Your race packet will include all the materials you need for your race, such as your timing chip, swim cap, bike sticker, race bib, and some fun stuff like your complimentary race shirt.

Be sure to bring your race bib, timing chip and swim cap on race day morning. And please be sure to bring only the timing chip for this race; DO NOT wear a timing chip from a prior race, or it may interfere with your time for One Last Tri, potentially not recording your effort.

Pick up your race packets at our retail store at 1338 Highway 96 East in White Bear Lake (get directions).  For relay teams, only one member needs to pick up the packet.

If you absolutely, positively can't make it before the race, then we will have race-day packet pick-up available.

Race Location

One Last Tri is being held at Ramsey County Beach (get directions).  The Beach is located at 5050 Lake Avenue, White Bear Lake, MN  55110.  It's only about 25 minutes from both downtowns.  Simply take 35E north to County Highway 96.  Go east on 96 for about 2 miles, then go north on 61.  Go about 1 mile on 61, then take a right on Lake Avenue / 96 for a few hundred yards until you see the beach.

Parking on race day will be available within the park and on nearby residential streets.  There are about 250 parking spaces available within the park, on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Once the lots are full, participants and spectators will have to park on nearby residential streets.  The closest will be those along 9th, 10th and 11th Streets near West Park.

Course Profile

SWIM COURSE

We will be doing mandatory pre-race updates near the pavilion at Ramsey Beach prior to the start.  From there, we will walk down to Memorial Beach (across the road from West Park) for the swim start.  It's about a 200 yard walk - a nice chance to warm up before the swim!

The short course swim will go out about 50 yards to the first orange buoy, and turn left (counter-clockwise), keeping the next orange buoys to your left.  The total distance will be about 400 yards.

The long course swim will go out about 250 yards to the first large yellow buoy, and turn left (counter-clockwise), keeping the next yelllow buoy to your left.  The total distance will be as close to 800 yards as we can get it.

All swimmers are REQUIRED to wear a swim cap provided by us. All participants must report to the swim start area 15 minutes prior to the scheduled time trial start, regardless of starting position.

The course and turns are defined with orange/yellow buoys which should always be on the swimmers RIGHT side.  Lifeguards and kayaks/canoes line the entire course.

LONG COURSE SWIM START

8:45am  Self-seeded "elite" wave
8:46am  Relay teams and Men
8:47am  Women

SHORT COURSE SWIM START

Swimmers will be organized according to age group, and then sent in waves of 2 persons about 3-5 seconds apart.   There will be a slight delay between age groups.  We will begin the race with a self-seeded "elite" wave that anyone who thinks they're fast enough to join may join (this is not a separate category for awards, it is only to allow fast athletes to avoid some congestion on the course).

We employ an every-other-year process for age group starts.  Next year, the swim start will be organized from younger age groups to older ones.

If you would like to start the race with someone from a different age group or gender, that's fine (for example, if you want to do the race with a friend or family member).  It won't impact your timing at all.

The start times below for the short course are ROUGH ESTIMATES only and are subject to change depending on registration numbers.

9:00am  Self-seeded "elite" wave
9:01am  Relay Teams
9:01am  Women 70 and Over
9:01am  Men 70 and Over
9:03am  Women 60-69
9:04am  Men 60-69
9:05am  Women 50-59
9:07am  Men 50-59
9:09am  Women 40-49
9:11am  Men 40-49
9:13am  Women 30-39
9:14am  Men 30-39
9:15am  Women 20-29
9:15am  Men 20-29
9:16am  Women 19 and Under
9:16am  Men 19 and Under

The transition area will be at the Ramsey County Beach, just up from the swim exit.

BIKE COURSE

Please note: To help with the congestion that often happens within the transition area, only participants and volunteers will be permitted in the transition area.  Bikes must be walked or run in the transition area. Mount/dismount zones are located just outside the transition area.

Directional signs, mile markers, and volunteers will be posted on the course during the race day to assist with navigation...but it always helps to know your course, so give it a look, give it a ride, and you'll be good to go on race day.

The entire bike route is open to traffic; please be aware of vehicles and plan on following all traffic rules when traffic control is not present. The road surface is asphalt and course volunteers (armed with brooms) are stationed at all turns.  This should be a nice, clean course.  Please help us keep it that way by holding on to your empty gel packs or other littler.

All bikes are required to display a bike number.  Our friends at Penn Cycle will provide pre-race bike support.

BIKE HELMETS ARE MANDATORY.

RUN COURSE

The run course is a gorgeous run along White Bear Lake.  It is pancake flat and fast, on a pedestrian running path.

Fluid replacement (water and HEED) will be available at: mile 1.5, near the turn-around, and at mile 3 for the long course, near that turnaround.

Refund / Cancellation Policy

This policy has been created in fairness to all the athletes so that equal opportunity exists for registering for all Tri Fitness events.

Tri Fitness reserves the right to cancel or re-schedule an event in the event of inclement weather, emergency, or natural disaster.  In the event of such a cancellation, there will be no refund of entry or processing fees.   If Tri Fitness decides to cancel an event for reasons under our control, entry fees will be refunded to existing registrants.

There are no race transfers on race day, even if a registered athlete is a no-show and a slot is available.  This is to ensure that events start on time, for safety considerations and event management.

Severe Weather

There is a chance of inclement weather. The safety of our participants, volunteers, spectators, police and everyone else is our top priority, so we may need to make race-day adjustments.

The race director will have NOAA weather alerts via phone and walkie-talkie, and will monitor any severe weather alerts.  All volunteers will watch for lightning and alert the director immediately if they see it.  We will be following a 30-30 policy, which is: if we witness a flash of lightning, and hear thunder within 30 seconds, then we will delay the race by 30 minutes. Everyone should avoid any metal objects or tall, solitary objects and head to their car if possible.

The roads will almost certainly be wet in that case.   Please watch for slick roads and standing water.

In the case of lightning during the course of the event, we may have to cancel and pull participants off the course. This will be the responsibility of the sag wagon and other volunteers as we can afford.   We will work to notfiy all participants currently on the course that the event is being canceled.

There are no refunds or transfers in the event we have to cancel the race, though we reserve the right to issue a transfer via email to registered participants. It is the absolute last option, but we have to have everyone's safety in mind.

Athlete Refund

Tri Fitness has a No refund policy.  If you are unable to participate after registration, you may transfer your registration to another athlete at no additional cost.  Please e-mail us at races@trifitnesswbl.com at least 7 days prior to the event to update athlete information.

Transfers

Under certain circumstances, race transfers can occur for an event within the same calendar year. A race transfer is defined as transferring an athlete’s registration to another race for any reason.

A race transfer can occur under the following conditions:

  • The request to transfer out of a race must be made 14 days or more prior to that scheduled event date.  No transfers will be allowed underneath this deadline unless there are extenuating circumstances.
  • Extenuating circumstances: If you have an injury (verified by a doctor's order) or a member of your immediate family has a death or a medical emergency and it is within 14 days of the scheduled event yet greater than 72 hours prior to the event, you will need to notify us in writing.  The race director will consider each request on a case by case basis after the event, for credit towards a future Tri Fitness event within the same calendar year.   No credits will be issued with less than 72 hours prior written notice to the event.
  • Transfers can be made to any race owned by Tri Fitness and list on our Events page.   Race transfers are only allowed once per person, per season.
  • Credit for the transfer will be based solely on the entry fee paid, and not inclusive of processing fees, etc.
  • If the race to which you are transferring has a higher entry fee as of the date of the transfer, you must pay the difference by making out a check to Tri Fitness.
  • There is a $5 fee to refund or transfer for any race and for any reason

Considerable effort goes into producing an event and funds are expended and applied in good faith based on a registration. Transferring two weeks out from an event can be managed, but under the two week limit a transfer causes considerable issues, both monetarily and organizationally as packets have been prepared with sized t-shirts, chip numbers have been requested based on the athlete’s entry, and perhaps a race has been closed in which a transfer would bar another athlete from entering the event.

Thank you very much for your understanding of this policy and thank you also for your participation in Tri Fitness events.
